Meet Ruthie Kent, Our Novice/Beginner Team Policy Debate Coach

Our Team Policy Debate Camp for novice / beginning debate students is led by Alumna Ruthie Kent who competed in Stoa debate events for three years in high school & coached SV novice debate as a student leader for two years. She qualified for Stoa’s national tournament, NITOC, in both Team Policy, Lincoln Douglas & Parliamentary Debate & also received numerous Team Policy & Lincoln Douglas Speaker awards. She enjoyed & excelled in the Extemporaneous Speech event which focuses on current events. Ruthie is passionate about teaching students the impact of strong communication, skills, intelligent arguments, & informed research & is dedicated to helping students grow in confidence in their presentation & critical thinking skills. Ruthie graduated from Aaron Academy in 2022 & has been working as an entrepreneur & a part time teacher. She loves being outside, writing, & spending quality time with her husband & family. She is our '25-'26 Ambassador Club Novice/Beginner Team Policy, Novice Speech Coach & Extemporaneous Speech Event Coach.

Stoa's '25-'26 Team Policy Resolution: Resolved: The United States Federal Government should substantially reform its policy toward one or more countries in Central/South America.

Senior Varsity Novice/Beginner Debate Camp Schedule & Plans

9:00-9:15: Intro to myself, Ambassador Club goals, & debate as a whole

9:15-9:30: Ice breakers

9:30-9:45 What is debate (stock issues)? What is a resolution?

9:45-10: Body language & its impact

10:00-10:30: Art of an argument + practice

10:30-10:45: I couldn’t disagree more

10:45-11:00 Break 🙂

11:00-11:30 Flowing- What is that? + Practice game

11:30-11:45: Cross-X - how does it work? Piranha pack? Examples?

11:45-12: Impacting, defending, being a chess player

12:00-12:30: Lunch!

12:30-1:00 Intro to the resolution & research tips

1:00-1:30: Let's build a case!

1:30-2:00 Fight, fight, fight!

2:00-2:15: Intro to negative briefs

2:15-2:45: Choose a case (or I choose), & write a brief on their main points

Camp Registration, Fees & Discounts

The fee for each SV Debate Camp student is $75. Register using the drop down link above.

Register by 6:00 p.m. Tuesday, July 23rd for our Early Registration Discount of $20. To receive the $20 Early Registration Discount for this Senior Varsity Debate Camp use the code - SV Early Debate - in your registration.

All Camp fees are paid electronically through Stripe which is included on this website as you register. Please note there is an additional service fee charged at check out. This fee is calculated and received solely by the provider. No payments will be accepted at camp as no cash will be exchanged on site.

Snacks & Lunch

While Ambassador Club will provide nutritious snacks and bottled water for each Camp's Snack Break, students attending the 9:00 am - 4:00 pm Senior Varsity Camps will need to bring their own lunches. Ambassador Club will have plenty of bottled water for students during lunch as well. Students are welcomed to bring their own labeled water bottles if they wish.
